Alan's philosophy about Architectural and Interior photography is that a good photograph should be:
  • Clear -- technically excellent with proficient technique that does not intrude on the image;
  • Creative -- stands as a beautiful image on its own; based on good composition, quality of light, emphasis of form, and imaginative use of color and texture;
  • Concise -- has a strong veiwpoint, without distracting elements, controlled and subtle use of any reinterpretation;
  • Compelling -- commands attention from the audience, inviting them into the space, intriguing them to want to look further; and
  • Communicative -- informs the audience about the architect’s intent and emphasis.

Alan strives to address each of these elements in work intended for client's Display, Portfolio, Competition Entry, self-published Marketing Materials, Advertising, and Website use.

Photography and architecture have both been lifelong interests. Growing up with a father in a major construction construction company that built the initial Air Force Academy campus including the Chapel designed by Walter Netsch and Skidmore Owings & Merrill and the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Grady Gammage Memorial Theater in Phoenix, Alan frequently got to explore impressive structures. Photography was an avocation starting in high school and becoming professional about 40 years ago.

Some of his earliest professional widely published assignments were for the Santa Fe Opera during the reconstruction in 1969 and extending through the 1970 season. Those images were published in Newsweek, Fortune, New York Times, New Mexico Architecture, Construction, and New Mexico Magazine.

Many photographs of historic buildings in Old Santa Fe Today, 2nd edition, published by UNM Press in 1972 and two subsequent editions are by Alan. During the last six years Alan has expanded his experience in Architectural photography. In 2002 he studied architectural photography with Nick Merrick (managing partner of the premier architectural photography firm Hedrick-Blessing in Chicago) and worked regularly for 1 1/2 years as an associate with Robert Reck in Albuquerque (Architectural Digest masthead photographer,) as a principal location assistant and second camera on numerous location assignments in Northern New Mexico, Phoenix, and Oklahoma City.

Alan has been primarily a Santa Fe, New Mexico Resident since 1946, and since 1995 has a home in Iowa City, Iowa. The Official business office location for Alan Stoker Photography is in Iowa City.

Technical Capabilities and Equipment

Alan works in all formats, in both film and digital capture.

Film work is done with 35 mm through 4 x 5 for transparencies or negatives (Nikon, Linhoff, and Schneider equipment); and digital capture utilizes Nikon, Fuji, and Kodak cameras, Epson professional film scanners, Epson professional printers for display prints or hard copy proofs.

For magazine, journal covers or large display prints Alan frequently works a hybrid approach involving 4x5 film capture and digital scanning to produce digital image files ready for press make-up or large display prints.

Alan is an advanced Photoshop worker and NAPP member with more than 15 years of extensive Photoshop experience. Intensive Photoshop training includes several courses of study study with John Paul Caponigro and Jerry Corvousier at the Santa Fe Workshops.

Alan has experience and a large complement of equipment for complex on-location lighting including an extensive inventory of Lowell tungsten equipment, and two Nikon and six White Lightning electronic flash units (with wireless remote control and synchronization); plus a variety of light modifiers: filters, gels, umbrellas, and reflectors.
